From View to Update

Hi, suppouse an Invoice Form.
The client needs that when the Invoice is paid the form opens in View mode but with a button (which has permission for some users) to chahnge the form to update mode.
Is that possible?
I can open the form in view mode if it is paid.
Try to add code to the button to set view mode to change but dont get the form to refresh itself.
Try refreshing the tabs but nothing, any way to do this?

I would do it at the browse level- ie have a button for view, and another one for change for those users who are allowed to change.
