Volunteers Needed to run Test
« on: January 27, 2009, 12:29:08 AM »
Hi Guys,

This is a different kind of request for help.

Graham Smith is interested in knowing how well the NetTalk Simple Server (which is the layer on which the web server is built) performs under load.

To this end he has set up a server at a large ISP with plenty of bandwidth. He has also written a small client app which will open connections to this server, and at very specific times will make requests on the server.

This effectively tests 2 things;

a) The number of "open connections" supported by the server. As you know web connections are only open for a brief instant - but it's still important to know if there are any limits on this front.

b) the performance issue, if any, when large numbers of clients make a request "at the same time".

Graham has graciously agreed to make the results of his tests available to the whole NetTalk community (good or bad). From our side we're interested to know the result, and if necessary to set the benchmark against which we can measure improvements.

Graham's page for this test is here
http://www.gsasoftware.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8&Itemid=10

So what do we need you for?
Well to make the test valid we need as many people to run the test client as possible. The official test will run from  Feb 1 to Feb 14, but if you can please download and run the client, on as many computers as you have, as soon as possible that would be great.

Graham has gone to great lengths to minimize the bandwidth consumed by the test (for each client) and also to make absolutely sure that no identifying information is passed to the server. He has released the source code to the client for inspection so feel free to compile that and run that if you prefer.

Thanks again.

Cheers
Bruce

Hi,

I think this is question all of us had at some stage or another.
The results should tell us all that NT rocks.
This could also help Capesoft make NT faster, beter and more streamline.

I am in to help with the test.
I can run the test on 9 different computers with 9 different ADSL lines.
That is already 9 test clients running.

Suggestion:
If you could make it so that there is an option to have it autostart and minimize to the system tray it would be great.
Then I can run it on more computers.
Some of the computers that I want to run it on gets restarted now and then and I am not always there to start the test app.
Winevent is already in so it would be easy.
I will then put the shortcut to start the test app in the start menus of all the computers.
I will then be able to run it on 15 computers.

Following Johan's suggestion to minimize to System Tray, I have made this adjustment and uploaded this version of the Client program.

Thanks to all those participating.

Hi,

Happy to help.

If its practical for Graham to release the source code (i already have a systray app doing comms, so i can throw it in there). I can get it onto about 1000 pcs on about 200 different connections of all varying speed and quality.

Failing that happy to help with a bunch of work computers.

Hi Graham,

The minimize to system tray works perfect.

Some more suggestions please:
1) Put an checkbox on the options screen "Auto Start Application"
This will automatically press the START button as soon as the app started.
2) Put a checkbox on the options screen "Auto Minimize to System Tray"
This will automatically minimize the app to the system tray.

This would be great because then nobody have to start the app and minimize it to the syetm tray.
Everything will be automatic.
I am going to install this on a lot of computers where the users restarts them from time to time and I don't want them to forget to start the app.

The testers that want to run this manually just don't tick the checkboxes.

Hi Graham,

since we're making suggestions - how about a "refresh" button to refresh the number of server connections currently open.

Cheers

Hi Bruce,

I'll make that tweak but to let you know, the server does reply to the "keepalive" packet from the client with current connections.

Unfortunately, haven't had a spare moment to knock up a report yet.  Will try and do this over the next few days.

I can tell you we had just over 100 simultaneous connections going, no problem.
