How hard would it be for you to perhaps make the tip field a little bigger?  Say 512 or so?

geez guys - it's just an upgrade - I worry that you're all expecting like HTML 6 or something...

In all honesty I don't know exactly what will be in the NT7 release, but I do know there are lots of nice things coming through the NT7 cycle next year. It's not like we hold back features, so there likely won't be too many features in the release - rather I take this opportunity to rework some of the internals underneath - things that are not easily changed mid-cycle.
