Well this is embarrassing... someone just emailed me a meeting appointment (.ICS) which appeared as an attachment on my iPhone... which i could tap on, it opened it and gave me the option of adding it to my calendar... (iPhone 4S on iOS6). Just charging my iPhone 3GS which i think is still on iOS5) to try it on that!

Worked on my 3GS (on iOS5) also. Hmmm...  I thought it might be the way the mine-attachment was added. So i cut out just the ICS file from the original request and sent it as a plain attachment and it also worked on both phones.

So i can only conclude that perhaps the ICS file might make the difference (The one i was looking at was generated by Exchange Server 2010).
