Hosting own websites using ADSL
« on: May 10, 2012, 04:45:27 AM »
Hi All

RackSpaceCloud seems adequate but works out quite expensive if you are an entry level user.

Some tips re hosting own websites using ADSL, please.

A step by step account would be nice - including solving Dynamic IP situation

Is this still valid?

Hi Johan,

the best way to solve the dynamic IP problem is to get a fixed IP address for your ADSL connection. This is relativly cheap to do these days.

Hosting on dynamic IP addresses implies a bit of down-time for the site every day between when the IP changes, and when the new address propogates. However there are services which do help in this aread - no-ip.com is one.

Also for hosting see the note I posted this morning in the "News" forum.

cheers

A easy and cheap way to solve the dynamicy ip issue is to look at Dyn .
They provide dns and domain for about 30 bucks a year us.  They also provide a small foot print app that when your isp changes your ip it updates your dns.  Some of the new routhers also do this.  I have this running at my hoime to test apps.  Works great.

This is running on a low budget computer and internet connection.  It alos has lots of other things running on it.

    www.dyndns.com    give them a try.

It better to have your own ip but if you don't this can get you buy.

Which authority do I approach to get a fixed IP address. Telkom or Uniform(http://co.za/), ???

Found this so far
http://business.telkom.co.za/enterprise/broadband-internet/TI-DIS/
http://business.telkom.co.za/enterprise/data-networks/branch-connectivity/vpn-lite/faq.html

Our network guy just told me I must do it via InternetSolutions - - they supply a dedicated router - so I must chuck out my NetGear? Hope it is wireless as well.

we got our fixed IP from mweb.
I think there was a special router for them, yes.
But adding wi-fi to the network is easy, and cheap, even if the ADSL router doesn't do it.
