Specific Q on Clarion Live Webinar "Clarion 11 Server"
« on: November 29, 2018, 05:31:21 PM »
Hi Bruce,
I have two Questions please, resulting from this and earlier Webinars.

1.You mention PORT 443 as the secure PORT to use.
If  Hosting  on an Amazon server with  a program having more than one concurrent web app running  and both to be secure- what PORT numbers do you then use?
2. Regarding getting the certificate and you demonstrated adding a domain ( you added le2.capesoft.com)

The Qs here are  :
1.Can you add any old domain address ( including fictional ones )or does the resulting certificate need to be  pointing to the hosting domain or a known valid  domain address ?
2.Can one domain have more than one certificate issued against it ?
What about on an amazon server where there is not necessarily a domain set up.?

Thanks
Regards,
Richard

Hi Richard,

>> If  Hosting  on an Amazon server with  a program having more than one concurrent web app running  and both to be secure- what PORT numbers do you then use?

In this situation I use the multi-site host app (see examples) - which let's the programs then be compiled as DLL's and "share" the port.

However it's also possible to run them on any other port you like. (you just need to include the port in the address when accessing the site.) so 4431 4432 and so on.

>> 1.Can you add any old domain address ( including fictional ones )

no. There has to be a DNS record for the domain registered. (I have le1, le2 and le3 all registered for testing purposes.)

>> 2.Can one domain have more than one certificate issued against it ?

Absolutely.  Firstly of course we're really talking about "sub domain" here most of the time - le2 is a subdomain of capesoft.com - hence le2.capesoft.com . A domain can have any number of subdomains, and you'd need a certificate for each subdomain [1].

Secondly even for 1 subdomain (le2.capesoft.com) any number of certificates can be issued. I've generated _lots_ of them in testing etc.

>> What about on an amazon server where there is not necessarily a domain set up.?

You don't set up the domain "on the amazon server". The amazon server has an IP address.

The domain is registered with a Domain Registrar and then managed via a DNS management tool.
So
a) you buy richard.com
b) you add richard.com to a domain management system 0 like ZonEdit, or Aplus or whatever
c) you create a subdomain there, and add a DNS record to point "le2.richard.com" at 1.2.3.4

Amazon is not involved in any of this. They are just providing you with the machine 1.2.3.4

Cheers
Bruce
