Nettalk 10 Server Webinar
« on: August 17, 2017, 07:39:17 PM »
Hi Bruce,
Just watched the Webinar on "NetTalk 10 Server" and in particular, the section on certificates
My questions are:
1. in the example you created a domain ...nettalk10.capesoft.com
Is that an imaginary address or is it a registered  sub address  of capesoft.com?
Could you not have simply entered capesoft.com ?
2. Can the one  certificate be shipped  to multiple clients ?
3. if so why did you say you could add as many domains and you wanted to ?
and , why would you want to?

I realize these questions are basic but nevertheless.....

thanks and regards,
Richard

Hi Richard,

>> 1. in the example you created a domain ...nettalk10.capesoft.com Is that an imaginary address or is it a registered  sub address  of capesoft.com?

It's a registered sub-domain of capesoft - ie a DNS record for it does exist.

>> Could you not have simply entered capesoft.com ?

yes. (except that's already in use on another machine, so not suitable for a demo.)

>> 2. Can the one  certificate be shipped  to multiple clients ?

One certificate can work on any number of machines. But the DNS record only points to one machine. I think you're asking about say lots of clients running your web app. In that case they would need a certificate for _their_ domain that points to _that_ server.

>> 3. if so why did you say you could add as many domains and you wanted to ?  and , why would you want to?

It's common for 1 server to serve multiple domains. In other words you might go to www.cidc2015.com or www.cidc2017.com but both of those are on the _same_ server.
Both resolve to the same IP address, there's only one server on that machine (with 2 certificates).

cheers
