Updating a live application
« on: November 30, 2011, 04:35:51 PM »
Assuming an application is live can you simply update the web folder while it is running or do you have to stop the service?

Being as my clients are worldwide in different time zones I cannot guarnatee someone is not using it at any time of the day/night.

So if I have to close the service does this matter or is it just like they lost the connection for a while?

Thanks

John

Depends what you are updating. CSS, Images Scripts etc you can update with users logged in. Your program unfortunately not - they will get page not found etc while you stop the server and copy in the new program file. It's a quick process and although I try to do it at night or the weekend occasionally I will do it during the day if it is an important bug fix. There is the risk however that someone may be half way through a form which will get lost.
