Update the Server while users are logged in?
« on: December 01, 2011, 01:20:45 AM »
Hi all

How to go about it - to update the server (say hosted by RackSpace) while users are logged in - say worldwide busy capturing data, printing reports, etc.

JVZ

EDIT:
OK just saw this: "Updating a live application"

BUT isn't there a way to warn users that an update is about to take place and that they must get OUT like in NOW?
Can one not upload a file, text file or whatever and the app polls for its presence and the text can be displayed in say the header?

The performance tab gives you some clues as to how many people are busy on the system at a time.
Despite having "world-wide" users, the simple math shows that it's easy to find times in the day, or times in the weekend where activity is very low. Early morning in Australia is Evening or night in the US and middle of the night in Europe/Asia. Because the land masses are not spread evenly, when it's midday over hawaii, pretty much everyone else is not working.

Clearly it's not a good idea to do your maintenance when others are working.

cheers
