Cookies or not
« on: March 16, 2011, 09:57:48 AM »
Hi Bruce,

We'll soon see some new legislation here in Denmark (and the EU) regarding the use of tracking cookies (protection of consumers).

It's still not totally clear exactly what's coming, but most likely it'll be required that a web page informs the user that a cookie is being stored on her pc (or maybe it'll even have to ask for permission).

In preparation for that - am I right in assuming that NT uses cookies -  but only for session management and nothing else (by default)?

Regards
Peter

Hi Peter,

"soon" being a relative term when it comes to legislation - but yes there are some rules coming. There are "exception" clauses though which allow for cookies where the cookie is there to make the app work. The example given is a shopping cart for example. Fundamentally the legislation is designed to go after people who are tracking, and aggregating, user info.

By default NetTalk doesn't store any cookies on the users machine. At least not on the disk. The cookies created by NetTalk are the least-offensive in that they only exist in the browser ram, and only for the life of the browser. If you close the browser (completely - ie for FF this means closing _all_ the FF browsers open on the machine) then the cookie is discarded. So technically this kind of cookie can't be used for the purposes of tracking users etc.

Correct.

Of course the "login cookie" (which incidentally is really the only other kind of cookie you should need - especially for apps where a login is required) is included in a number of the examples, but it's completely optional. In the examples it's even "opt in" to the user to make use of that facility, and you could display a suitably terrible warning of impending doom next to that checkbox if you wanted to.

Cheers
Bruce
